OK let's try something a little different for this contest. One of my favorite things about coin collecting is looking at a coin and wondering what hands it has passed through on its journey into my collection. No one really knows if the coin you are holding in your hand once graced the hand of someone famous (or infamous). It may have also been present at some historic event, safely tucked away in a pocket or purse. So for this contest I picked as prizes three well-circulated coins with mint dates that were important years in the history of the United States. Who knows, these coins may have been a witness to history. The coins are a 1777 1 Real, 1865 2 Cent and 1944 Half Dollar. The selection of the years is no coincidence. These were all years where the US was at war. In 1777 we were fighting the Revolutionary War. In 1865 we were embroiled in the Civil War. 1944 found the US fighting against the Axis powers in World War II.
Monday May 25th is Memorial Day, this day is set aside to thank all of the veterans for their service and sacrifice. So this contest is a tribute to all veterans, my Dad, US Army and my Father-in-Law, US Marine Corps included.

The rules are simple:
*** The contest is open to all members of this forum with 5 or more posts and a shipping address in the continental US
*** To enter the contest you need to post a factoid about each of the three years that the prize coins were minted. For example: 1777- George Washington led his troops to Valley Forge where they spent the winter, 1865- Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, 1944- Allied forces invaded mainland Europe on D-Day.
*** The winners will be selected at random from all entries on June 6th, 2009.

Good luck to everyone and to all veterans a sincere thank you.

Cool contest. I love history. I'm going to stick with the theme of U.S. military events for my entrance.

September 11 of 1777 was the Battle of Brandywine. It took place in Pennsylvania, and unfortunately was a victory for the Brits.

March 25 of 1865 was Lee's final offensive in the battle of Fort Stedman.

July 21-Aug 8 of 1944 was when the battle of Guam was going on. The U.S. took the island back from the Japanese.

I hope I did all that right.
Thanks for the contest.

I'll jump in on this one.
1777 - June 14th - Stars and Stripes adopted by congress as the official flag of the United States.
1865 - May 4th - Abe Lincoln is shot by John Wilkes Booth.
1944 - Nov. 7th - FDR is re-elected over Dewey to make him the only U.S. President to serve a fourth term.

Great contest, thanks Andy!  Grin

Thanks for the contest Andy.

1777- New York adopts a Constitution denying Women, even those with property, the right to vote.

1865- The Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel invents the Blasting Cap. Used to detonate Nitroglycerine safely and dependably, itexpands the use of explosives in the industry.

1944- The US Eastman Kodak Company produces "Kodacolor", a color negative film which makes it possible to take color pictures with a reasonably cheap camera.

I'm going to change the rules a little to let some of our newer members in the contest. Now only 5 posts on the forum are required to be eligible.

Sorry Nevol, I'll be doing good to figure out how to ship the coins domestically. I wasn't quite ready to tackle international shipping yet. That's why I limited this too Continental US only.

Last chance everyone- The drawing is tommorrow!
